"To Be …" is the title of Elsinore’s bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2032, the next time Denmark hosts the title. Meet the key people behind the bid for an informal conversation about the cultural tension between Europe and local politics in a municipality with just 64,000 residents.
Good ideas go hand in hand with good conversations. The Elsinore 2032 association discovered this five years ago when it invited the entire city of Helsingør—and later the surrounding area—to join in on the idea of becoming the European Capital of Culture.
Thousands of conversations with representatives of the cultural community, organizations, business owners, artists, and politicians have laid the groundwork for the application, which is now almost ready to be submitted in the first round of the competition among Danish cities for this prestigious title.
At the production facilities of the M61 Art Association, we’ll continue our conversations over a cup of coffee and some cake. Everyone is welcome to join this informal gathering, where the discussion will be based on three very brief talks:
"Being"
, Jens Frimann Hansen, director of Helsingør Theater and chair of the Elsinore 2032 association, which is drafting the application on behalf of the city. Jens recounts the rather unconventional story behind the bid and reveals the program’s three main themes: Being, Becoming, Belonging.
"Becoming
" Jesper Bech Schmidt, Director of Culture for the City of Helsingør. Jesper offers a candid look at both the advantages and disadvantages of implementing municipal cultural policy in collaboration with a locally based organization—one that, unlike paid consultants, doesn’t always end up doing exactly what you ask it to.
"Belonging
" by Maja Quist, cultural consultant for the City of Helsingør. Maja takes us on her journey as a cultural consultant through all of the city’s political committees, councils, and boards, where she has facilitated a consultation on stakeholders’ perceptions of what culture can contribute across sectors.
PANEL DISCUSSION: KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE
Under the title “When Art Moves to the Periphery,” Per Mikkelsen, chair of the art association, will moderate a panel discussion featuring Anne Mie Bak, photographer, visual artist, and member of the Corner artists’ collective; Claus Handgaard, visual artist and curator for the Corner artists’ collective; and Emilia Nykjær Isaksson, outreach coordinator and executive director of SMK Thy
