Sponsors from the Helsingør business community are making it possible to decorate Tikøb, Espergærde, and Helsingør with beautiful posters for this year’s Culture Night.

“It’s a dream assignment. Culture Night throughout Elsinore is, after all, a local flagship event for all of us who live here. So it’s something truly special to be asked to design this year’s poster. I’m so proud to be able to contribute,” says Jonas Lönborg, a poster artist with a studio in Espergærde.

This experienced graphic designer is no unknown quantity in the local scene. Jonas Lönborg is the creator of the newly iconic cover for Wonderful Copenhagen’s 2023 tourist brochure. Using a Hamlet skull as the backdrop for a sort of crowd scene, he has previously demonstrated his ability to visually convey Elsinore’s distinctive characteristics—and its soul.

“We have chosen an artist who understands the synergy between cultural, community, and commercial life throughout Helsingør. As a resident of the municipality, Jonas experiences firsthand every day what we can achieve as a host city when stakeholders come together on a project like Culture Night. So he was our first choice when we put the assignment out to bid,” explains Aslak Gottlieb, chair of the Culture Night steering committee.

The poster is sponsored by key players in the local business community. At Sparekassen Sjælland-Fyn, they recognize the importance of culture for the city’s economic growth and social cohesion. Branch Manager Michael Hartoft explains the bank’s sponsorship of the artist’s fee:

“It goes without saying that in a city aspiring to be a European Capital of Culture, the private sector should support projects like Culture Night. An active cultural life is crucial for the city’s commercial life. And for the social cohesion that keeps things running smoothly on a daily basis. Cross-cutting cultural events help bring the city together and make the City of Helsingør a unique destination—both for residents and visitors.”

The poster will be printed pro bono by Backe&Ko and unveiled at a press conference at Sparekassen Sjælland-Fyn in Helsingør on Monday, September 2, at 10:00 a.m.

ABOUT THE POSTER

  • The poster depicts a moon in warm tones against a dark blue background, set against a simplified ocean.
  • The Moon is composed of about 400 items, mainly vintage illustrations, most of which are related to North Zealand to varying degrees.
  • The theme of the exhibits is a mix of flora, fauna, science, the ocean, and culture.
  • The goal is for the poster to draw the audience in, pique their curiosity, and encourage them to explore.
  • It can be downloaded here and must be submitted by September 24 at 12:00 PM, clearly indicating the artist’s name:

Jonas Lönberg holds a degree in industrial design from the Danish Design School and has been working in graphic design for 25 years. In recent years, he has primarily focused on his own projects, particularly collages and poster art, but he has also found time to take on graphic design assignments for clients such as the Frilandsmuseet, Helsingør Sundhedshus, Kronborg, and the National Museum. His latest project has been writing a children’s book about a duck with big dreams, which he is currently illustrating.

Jonas has a studio in Espergærde, where he also lives with his wife and two daughters, as well as a small flock of chickens. When he’s not working at his computer or sketching, he spends his time reading books, working on garden projects, and spending time outdoors as a scout leader with the Espergærde Scouts.

INFO

  • Culture Night in Tikøb will take place on Friday, September 20
  • Culture Night in Elsinore and Espergærde will take place on September 27

Since 2023, the Elsinore 2032 Association has served as the secretariat for Culture Night, an event that has been held for more than 30 years. All participants are welcome to contribute events, large or small, which can be listed in the joint program at www.kulturnathelsingor.dk/2024

The steering committee for Culture Night consists of stakeholders who wish to contribute to the initiative. It meets four times a year to establish the framework. In 2023, the steering committee adopted a three-year development plan leading up to the town’s anniversary in 2026.

As part of the plan, the organizers will test a digital solution in 2024 designed to make it easier to navigate the many evening events and find your way around. The plan also includes a special event for young people.

Another new feature of the evening is a collaboration between the steering committee, Helsingør Dagblad, and Helsingør Museums on a cultural history quiz that takes the form of a scavenger hunt around the city, passing by the newspaper’s editorial office, where an “open cultural night office” will be in operation throughout the evening.

Culture Night is sponsored by the City of Helsingør.
